Abide With Me, sung by Antrim Mennonite Choir

Music: Eventide, William H. Monk, 1861 . Mrs. Monk described the setting:
This tune was written at a time of great sorrow\u2014when together we watched, as we did daily, the glories of the set\u00adting sun. As the last golden ray faded, he took some paper and penciled that tune which has gone all over the earth.
Lyte was inspired to write this hymn as he was dying of tuberculosis; he finished it the Sunday he gave his farewell sermon in the parish he served so many years. The next day, he left for Italy to regain his health. He didn\u2019t make it, though\u2014he died in Nice, France, three weeks after writing these words. Here is an excerpt from his farewell sermon:
O brethren, I stand here among you today, as alive from the dead, if I may hope to impress it upon you, and induce you to prepare for that solemn hour which must come to all, by a timely acquaintance with the death of Christ.
For over a century, the bells of his church at All Saints in Lower Brixham, Devonshire, have rung out \u201cAbide with Me\u201d daily. The hymn was sung at the wedding of King George VI, at the wedding of his daughter, the future Queen Elizabeth II, and at the funeral of Nobel peace prize winner Mother Teresa of Calcutta in1997.
The darkness deepens; Lord with me abide.
When other helpers fail and comforts flee,
Help of the helpless, O abide with me.
Swift to its close ebbs out life\u2019s little day;
Earth\u2019s joys grow dim; its glories pass away;
Change and decay in all around I see;
O Thou who changest not, abide with me.

TrÄim vremuri extrem de dificile. DaÂcÄ cineva ar dori sÄ compunÄ un act de acuzare Ă®mpotriva vieĹŁii noastre biseÂriceĹźti, ar fi imposibilÄ obĹŁinerea unui verdict de nevinovÄĹŁie. Da, toĹŁi suntem vinovaĹŁi. Istoria cunoaĹźte vremuri când viaĹŁa bisericeascÄ a fost la fel de dezorganizatÄ ca Ĺźi a noastrÄ. Au exisÂtat lupte, schisme, acuzaĹŁii reciproce, calomnii, preÂsiuni; dar este o diferenĹŁÄ Ă®ntre ce a fost Ĺźi ce este acum: la temelia acelor tulburÄri despre care ne vorbeĹźte istoria erau Ă®ntotdeauna lupte dogmatice, Ă®n vreme ce acum sunt patimi omeneĹźti, care ies la ivealÄ farÄ sÄ se deghizeze mÄcar Ă®n dispute doctrinare. Plot:
Told in flashback, the film relates Francis of Assisi’s evolution from rich man’s son to religious humanitarian and eventually to full-fledged saint. Francesco was based on Hermann Hesse’s {-Francis of Assisi,} which director Liliana Cavani had previously filmed in 1966. The Saint and founder of the Franciscan Order of Friars Minor is played by Mickey Rourke, and his inspiration, the woman who later became Saint Clare, is played by Helena Bonham Carter.
Raised as the pampered son of a merchant, Francis goes off to war only to return with a profound horror for the society which generated such suffering. In one scene, as an act of renunciation, he strips himself of his fine clothing in front of his father and leaves the house naked and barefoot, joining the lepers and beggars in the poor section of town.
The film follows with a series of episodes from the saint’s life rather than a coherent narrative, following up until his final days when he receives the stigmata, or wounds similar to those on the body of Jesus at the crucifixion. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide.
