Acasa, Shabbatul este de obicei inaugurat de mama, care aprinde lumanarile chiar inainte de apusul soarelui. In familiile traditionale, tatal recita kiddushul, binecuvanteaza copiii si recita un pasaj din Biblie in onoarea femeii curajoase. Painea impletita de Shabbat (hallah), mancarurile speciale, fata de masa alba si cantatul de zemirot (cantece) ajuta la sporirea spiritualitatii zilei.
